Difficulty Urinating and Frequent UrinationsAs men age, they may experience symptoms such as frequent urination, especially at night. This can be a sign of cancer, or of a condition called benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), which is an excess growth of the inner part of the prostate. Other symptoms men might experience include difficulty urinating, blood or pus in the urine, and/or bone pain, especially in the back or upper thighs. As we get older, almost all of us experience a greater need to get up at night to urinate. However, excessive urination at night (called nocturia) is a symptom, not a disorder in itself. Causes for this change include more restless sleep, an enlarged prostate, changes in muscles that control the bladder and more urine being produced. Increased urination may occur in the early stages of kidney disease, when the kidneys can't concentrate the urine well. It's also common in people with heart and liver failure. Decreased bladder capacity can be caused by obstruction of the bladder outlet, pressure on the bladder from the outside and even anxiety. However, the most common reason for men being awakened at night to urinate is an enlarged prostate. Men with this condition have to urinate frequently because they can't empty the bladder fully, so it fills up faster.
